Part 1: Nafpaktos & Ioannina
Every year, around the end of October, I take a special trip with my mother to celebrate her birthday. It has become our little tradition — a time to explore somewhere new, reconnect, and experience Greece the way our guests do. At White Cube Travel, we believe that we travel first and suggest later. Before we design or recommend any new route, we go out and live it ourselves.
This year, we decided it was time for something different — an authentic mainland tour in Greece that would combine history, scenic drives, and genuine local hospitality. We wanted to go beyond the typical island-hopping routes and rediscover the charm of the Greek mainland.
Setting Out on a Mainland Tour in Greece: A New Route Beyond the Peloponnese
After completing a memorable round-trip through the Peloponnese a few years ago, this autumn felt like the perfect time to turn our compass north. Instead of heading toward the islands, we planned a mainland tour in Greece that would take us from Athens to Nafpaktos, then on to Ioannina, and eventually Meteora.
It was a journey designed to explore at a slower pace — to enjoy the natural beauty, meet local hosts, and uncover stories that make every region of Greece unique.
We started early from Athens, with our first destination set for Nafpaktos. But before reaching it, two iconic stops were a must along the way: the Corinth Canal and Ancient Corinth.
The Corinth Canal is one of Greece’s greatest engineering marvels. Carved through solid rock, it connects the Aegean and Ionian Seas — transforming the Peloponnese into an island. Standing on the bridge and gazing down at the narrow blue passage, you can’t help but admire its brilliance.
A few minutes away lies Ancient Corinth, where myth and history intertwine. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the ancient forum stand as a reminder of Corinth’s once-great influence. It’s also where St. Paul preached — making it an essential stop for travelers who love history and spirituality alike.
Nafpaktos: The Seaside Gem of Our Mainland Tour in Greece
By early afternoon, we crossed the impressive Rio–Antirrio Bridge and arrived in Nafpaktos, one of the most charming towns on the mainland. Nestled between the sea and the hills, Nafpaktos offers a combination of Venetian history, local life, and stunning scenery.
We had lunch by the harbor — a postcard-perfect spot framed by fishing boats and stone walls. Later, we wandered through narrow streets filled with character, small shops, and cafés buzzing with friendly locals. The highlight was climbing to the castle of Nafpaktos, one of the best-preserved in Greece. From the top, the view opened up across the gulf, revealing the bridge and distant mountains under the warm autumn light.
As the evening fell, we enjoyed dinner at a small local restaurant we discovered by chance — simple, warm, and unforgettable. This is what makes a mainland tour in Greece so special: the spontaneous encounters and genuine moments that you can’t plan, but always remember.
Day Two: Continuing Our Mainland Tour in Greece Toward Ioannina
The following morning, after a rich breakfast, we left Nafpaktos behind and started driving toward Ioannina, a city surrounded by mountains and mirrored by a tranquil lake. The route was full of breathtaking scenery — mountain passes, stone bridges, and valleys that capture the wild beauty of northern Greece.
Along the way, we stopped at Zalogo, a historic site that holds a deep emotional story. It was here, in 1803, that the Women of Zalogo chose to leap from the cliffs rather than surrender to Ottoman forces. The monument at the top honors their sacrifice and courage. Standing there, overlooking the valley, I felt a profound respect for this moment in Greek history — one that defines the nation’s spirit of freedom.
Ioannina: Lakeside Charm and Genuine Greek Hospitality
By early afternoon, we reached Ioannina, our next stop on this mainland adventure. The city, with its calm lake and lively old town, felt like a blend of history, culture, and nature all in one.
We checked into 1929 Boutique Residences, located right across from the lake. Our host, Mr. Giannis, welcomed us warmly — a true example of Greek hospitality. He had even included private parking in the room rate, making our stay effortless from the start.
We spent the afternoon exploring Lake Pamvotida, whose calm waters reflect the surrounding mountains and the city’s old fortress walls. Small boats cross regularly to the Lake Island, one of Ioannina’s most beloved attractions, filled with monasteries and small local shops.
In the evening, we went for something different. Instead of traditional Greek fare, we visited The Schnitzel Factory, a small restaurant run by German owners who brought their culinary expertise to Ioannina. The result? Perfectly cooked schnitzels in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere — a fun reminder that Greece’s food scene is full of surprises.
Naturally, no day ends without something sweet. We grabbed some local ice cream and took a final lakeside walk, enjoying the reflection of lights dancing on the water.
Reflections on Our Mainland Tour in Greece
This short journey reminded me why the mainland of Greece is such an incredible destination. Beyond the islands and beaches lies a land full of heritage, authentic experiences, and local warmth. A mainland tour in Greece offers the chance to connect deeply — to see the real countryside, taste regional specialties, and meet the people who give each destination its heart.
As travel designers, we believe the best way to inspire our guests is to explore first. After this trip through Nafpaktos and Ioannina, I can confidently say that mainland Greece is not just an alternative — it’s a revelation waiting to be shared.
